1. Mobile fish and crustaceans and such can browse around the edges of the area.
2. Warm water rises, and can carry with it organic material (and inorganic material too) to the planktonic area high above.
3. Since there's a tall water column above the area, there's going to be a rain of the dead from above. Dead fish, etc. can bring new materials to the area.
