answers:
Lighting the Way to Reality say: Scientists do not say an organ or body structure is vestigial as waste as you called it.

Scientists say that an organ or body structure is vestigial if its current form is significantly smaller than it was in an evolutionary ancestor. It becomes smaller because it no longer provides its original major function. That does not mean it does not currently provide some other function that it has been co-opted to do.

Evolution is adaptive and makes use of what is available.

Silver Shade say: Because when removed the body continued to function... (though this is not true )
-
zirp say: Vestigial doesn't mean "waste"

Vestigial means we don't/didn't know its function, or even if it has any

Candice say: Alot of people still seem to say that the appendix is a vestigial organ, but this is absolute nonsense!

The appendix is far from a vestigial organ because the appendix helps to store bacteria that is beneficial to repopulate the digestive system after an illness.

The same thing is said about the tail bone in that, the tail bone is often cited as being a vestigial organ, but once again, this is absolute nonsense!

The tailbones actual name is the coccyx, but for simplistic reasons, I'll refer to it as the tailbone. The tailbone actually helps various muscles & tendons, therefore it's not vestigial organ! It also helps to stabilise an individual when they are seated in an upright position.

CantHaveItBothWays say: These organs served some purpose in the past. This is determined by studying evolution. Scientists do know their purpose.
-
CRR say: It fitted in with evolutionary theory at the time. Evolutionists once identified nearly 200 vestigial organs in the human body making them a veritable museum of our evolutionary history. Since then functions have been found for almost all of these and this had required a change in the definition of "vestigial organ" to keep the story alive.
