But on a more serious note, mucus is formed every day and they're dilute enough to just flow "away" (down) for instance.
In an infection or in cases or irritation due to foreign matters, more mucus will be produced by the mucus cells to trap it. When you have too much of that, then it'll be "drier" and hence thicker. As all these "gunky" stuff hangs there, the cilia starts sweeping them up.
That's the feeling we get -- like something stuck near the throat that needs to be expelled.
Going round and round, why is it disgusting?? Well, there'll be bacteria and it's (expelled mucus) usually not sterile. This is a little layman-ish so I hope you understand.

There are lots of things that are both natural and disgusting. Most bodily fluids, rotting fruit, cow dung, swamp gas, etc, etc, etc. Why would you expect there to be a correlation between "natural" and "accepted"? There's no evidence to back that up.
