Venus occasional passes closer to earth than any other planet.
But Mercury is closest to earth on average than Venus.

don r say: Start with the sun in the center, then there's mercury, venus, earth, mars, an astroid belt, then jupiter, saturn neptune uranus and pluto. They're looking for a 10th planet and calculated where it could be by distance, but it hasn't yet been seen. Pluto's orbit is eccentric in that sometimes it gets closer to the earth than Uranus. Don't expect me to name all the moons except ours, and mar's two- deimos and phobos
