if there was no sun would the earth be freezing like Antartica?......

if there was no sun would the earth be freezing like Antartica?

-------------------------------------------------------

answers:
nineteenthly say: Colder than that, but yes. AntarCtica.
-
Const. King say: It would be much worse than that. Guaranteed you car battery will be dead.
-
aladdinwa say: It would be much, much worse. Just a few degrees above absolute zero.
-
Sarah say: Planets revolve around stars. If the sun did not exist, neither would the solar system.
-
Jeffrey K say: No. It was be frozen like Pluto. The air would freeze and snow down to the ground. Oceans would freeze solid.
-
Ronald 7 say: Without the Sun our Earth would be Absolutely lifeless at Zero Kelvin and drifting through Space without the Sun to Orbit around
The whole Solar System would be the same
Just drifting until it comes across another centre of gravity
-
Donut Tim say: Yes it would freeze, but not like Antarctica.
-----
If our Sun were to disappear:

• Earth normally experiences darkness half of each 24 hour period during which it cools several tens of degrees. Now it would also cool during the other half so the surface cools twice as much during each period.
• After three days the air temperature would be so low that no moisture could remain in it. Without clouds the Earth's heat would radiate into space more quickly.
• The ground contains far more heat than does the air and so takes longer to cool. But after 10 to 20 days the surface would be a hundred or so degrees Fahrenheit below freezing.
• After 15 to 30 days all the Earths oxygen, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen in the atmosphere would have turned to liquids and solids. With negligible atmosphere, cooling would be even more rapid. Most life forms would have died before this.
• A few months later, the surface temperature would be just 50 or so degrees above absolute zero. This temperature would be maintained by Earth’s core heat.
• Some single celled life forms could possibly continue to live deep in the Earth's crust (up to five miles) although the habitable zone may change dramatically. Most of those life forms, not being capable of moving to better climes, would likely die.
-
ANDRE L say: Without a Sun, the Earth would be so cold that the gasses in our atmosphere would freeze out into solid form, like powders.

We'd be colder than even Pluto is.
-
megalomaniac say: It would be a lot colder than that.
-
oikoσ say: No; it would be colder.
-
Trilobiteme say: We be a wandering planet
-
stephen say: much colder down in the minus 200's, likely.
-
Fred say: If our sun suddenly disappeared; in a very short amount of time, "like Antarctica" would be a very warm memory! (but no one would be around for the memory to exist)
-
az_lender say: No, it would be freezing like a "brown dwarf" (much colder than Antarctica).
-
Joe Roth say: We would all be dead.
-
David say: First of all, Antarctica is part of the earth so your question is nonsensical. But without a sun the earth would be close to absolute zero, much colder than any temperature ever recorded anywhere on the surface of the earth.
-
Coquihalla say: There would be no solar system as the planets would still be hurtling through space before it got caught in the tractor beam of a star to orbit around.
-
Tom S say: It would be much colder than Antarctica, colder than Pluto!
-
quantumclaustrophobe say: More like freezing like Pluto.
-
Fuhr say: Without a sun, there wouldn't be an Earth.
-
PHILIP say: The Earth would be a lifeless ball of ice.
-
Jacob say: well first, there would be no solar system. second, it would probably be absolute zero, or the coldest tempature that it counld get
-
poldi2 say: If there was no sun, the entire Earth would be much colder than Antarctica.
The oceans would be solid ice, the atmosphere would freeze out and the only heat would be from volcanic activity.
-
Eric say: it would be too cold for life
-
Bill-M say: If there was no sun there would be no planets. But for the sake of your question, Earth would be frozen. MORE than Antarctica.
A Lot More.
-
CarolOklaNola say: Worse than Antarctica The atmosphere would be frozen. There would be no atmosphere.
-
duke_of_urls say: The Earth and the Sun were both parts of the same formation. The Earth would not have formed without the Sun being formed with it.

That being said, if a rogue planet (a planet without a star to orbit) had the exact same chemical composition as the Earth, it would not be freezing like Antarctica because Antarctica is simply covered with ice (frozen water), but a rogue planet in space would have a temperature near absolute zero, so it would be covered in not only ice, but also frozen nitrogen, frozen oxygen, frozen argon, and frozen carbon dioxide. It would have no atmosphere.

It would be way beyond freezing like Antarctica!
-
Bill say: If there was no sun there would be no solar system as there would be no solar gravity to either form it or to hold it together. Earth would be drifting through space and close to absolute zero.
-
Steven say: We would all be dead by now just like planet Pluto
