Why does the moon have a side covered with distinctive black “splotches”?
Is it reminisce of when planet theia hit new born earth??

answers:
aladdinwa say: No, because the Moon was molten when it first coalesced after the impact with Theia, so the surface would have been homogeneous and uniform as it was cooling.
The maria (or "splotches") were created by huge asteroid impacts which released still-cooling maga from under the Moon's surface that spread out and cooled. It's a darker color because it's a slightly different mineral content from the thin and cooled surface the asteroid punched through.

Ronald 7 say: No they are solidified patches of Lava from billions of years ago when Earth and the Moon were still young and solidifying
Earth was not born
It colagulated from the dust on its own gravity
The Moon was a result of the ejecta from the Theia collision coagulating
This was proven during the Apollo mission
The Moon is made up of the same elements as Earth
Theia ended up part of Earth

poldi2 say: Those splotches are craters that have filled with lava in the past.
No, it is not reminiscent of when the moon was first formed.

CarolOklaNola say: It is because the Moon is lopsided and because Earth's mass and gravity is a little stronger in the Moon's Nearside.. The mare, the dark areas are flood basalts from the Moon's outer core and mantle. They are not impact craters or volcanic craters.
The Farside had a thicker crest. A con's much smaller moon coalesced after Theia's impact that impacted the Far side several million years later..More meteorites of all sizes impact the Farside.

Sukrit say: Maybe asteroids. May all be pain free and tears restored.

Quentin say: That's the dark side of the moon!
