And over 100 billion other galaxies in the universe.
Think of our solar system as a small town. Its one of many small towns in one state. That state is one of many in one country. That country is one of many on Earth.

fdfaf say: Many star systems are possible, but probability of life is still impossible. I guess there are trillions of star systems with no life on their planets.

Brigalow Bloke say: Thousands of others have been detected.

Clive say: Well, what's a solar system? Let's say it's a star with planets going round it - is that what you meant?
If that's your definition, then ours most certainly isn't the only one. It's very hard to detect if other stars have planets because they're so far off, but with improving technology, the first definite planet around another star was detected 25 years ago. Since then it's become apparent that there are thousands of the things - over 3,000 positively confirmed so far.
And that's only for stars that are relatively close so we can actually detect there's something there. It's looking like it's unusual for a star NOT to have at least one planet. Which shouldn't really be surprising. The Sun is a very boringly average yellow dwarf star and it has planets, asteroids, comets, dwarf planets, the lot. Assuming that all stars must have formed in the same kind of way, it would be odd to think that it's unusual.

USAFisnumber1 say: LOL. well, technically since our sun is called "SOL" our system is the only solar system. But that aside, we know of at least 100 other suns that have planets revolving around them.

Mutt say: A "solar system" is a star (or star system) that has planets orbiting it. There have been many other solar systems discovered recently, and more to be found as we look for them.
