While there are a variety of issues with the languages through which scriptures have been translated, I believe the terminology for marking the passage of time - days, lunar cycles, seasons, years - are clear enough and well understood enough that the mistake you're suggesting doesn't make sense.
Also, how does your suggestion mesh with those individuals who's lives were described as shorter? Abraham's wife Sarah was described as living 127 years, which by your metric would be less than 10 years. Moses lived 120 years, he was 40 when he fled Egypt, and 80 when he returned to free his people - so at age 3 he struck an Egyptian slave master and killed him, fled to the desert, and returned at age 6 to lead the Exodus...

As for any confusion between years and months ... I think anybody older than 9 years knows the difference.
