Mark F say: Astronauts on the moon saw stars, their camera's didn't. That's a function of how the camera gathers light.

spot a say: The stars in the movie are fake. The sky is dark at 110,000 feet. The atmospheric pressure at this altitude is similar to Mars at sea level. Are stars visible in Mars rover pics? Th stars can be photographed from the moon by sheltering the camera in the shadow of the lunar lander. Here is a sample with some of the stars labelled

Dump the liberals into Jupiter say: Glare from the sunlit lunar surface.

Joseph say: Who said that they couldn't see stars from the Moon? They could see them just fine. Don't make a mistake thinking that a camera is just like a human eye.

Our brain continuously adjust the iris of the eye so that we can see bright and dim objects at the same time. The camera doesn't do this. It has a mechanical shutter that lets the light reach the film. Depending on the subject of a picture the photographer can control how much the shutter opens and how long it stays open. Taking photos is a balancing act: let the shutter open too much and the bright objects will be over-exposed but you could see the dimmer objects better; leave the shutter open for too long and the picture will be smeared.

The astronauts came to photograph the Moon, not the stars. The camera was set to take pictures of the bright lunar surface and of the astronauts wearing white space suites, not the dim stars in the background. Had the camera been set up to take the pictures of the stars the images of the lunar surface would have been grossly overexposed.
