I know that gravity is a theory, i'm not stupid, but say it exists: why doesn't the moon just fall towards us?

you can search hundreds of discussions about it on YR; Im tired of it enough to prefer using my time elsewhere and let the Internet sort it out.-jcastro say: Naming point: gravity is a force, and General Relativity is the current theory of gravitation. This said.........

Next, about your asking about the Moon falling.

It should come as no surprise to you that the faster you throw something horizontal to the ground, the farther away it lands. It doesn't take a rocket to push it, the same way that when you throw a rock it keeps moving after it leaves your hand (it doesn't fall straight back to the ground). The same thing happens to the Moon, as well as satellites orbiting the Earth. Once a certain velocity is reached at a certain altitude, the only thing changing its direction and velocity is gravity. You know that the Moon orbits the Earth and it comes back to the same place after 28 days (the same phase repeats). You know that the Earth turns every 24 hours. Therefore, you should watch the Moon every night and find that it rises 24h/28 = 0.857 hours = about 51 minutes later than the day before. Given the distance to the Moon, you should have no trouble figuring out how fast the Moon is moving in its orbit around the Earth.

Of course, you can disregard all of that and shoot out that the Earth is flat. I won't argue with you on that, you can search hundreds of discussions about it on YR; I'm tired of it enough to prefer using my time elsewhere and let the Internet sort it out.

The Moon doesn't fall on Earth because it's going too fast for that. The force which moves it counterbalance the gravitational force, making the Moon do orbits.

Joshua say: This is actually a pretty logical question. It's like standing on a bed with a glass of wine also on it. The mattress moves in, and the glass falls inward towards the impression your feet leaves. This would be the case with the moons to their planets and the planets to their star if they were standing still. But everything in the universe is moving at a very fast pace. Imagine a game of roulette. When you spin the ball around the wheel it just orbits the center, but when the will stops, the ball falls back toward the center. Same process with the sun, planets, and satellites of the planets. Hope this helped.

Bill say: Gravity is NOT a Theory. Gravity is a proven FACT. Put something in your hand and let it go. What happens?
It falls to the Floor. That is Gravity.
The Moon is in orbit around the Earth. The Speed of the moon keeps it in orbit and the Earth's gravity keeps it in place. there are two forces involved one force is trying to force to moon to go straight and the other is making it curve around the Earth.

Paul Jean Pierre say: The same reason why the moon rotates around the Earth, and not moving away.

Reason is gravity. Gravitational pull of earth is balanced by centrifugal force and which is what makes it stay its orbit and rotate around us.
