If a huge asteroid were coming towards earth, and a plan to blow it up was in effect?

In any event, as everyone ahs said, you want to deflect it slightly and not blow it up.-PhotonX say: The B in ICBM stands for ballistic, which is another way of saying its basically a rock--the rocket has just enough energy to hurl the warhead into sub-orbital space, at which time it makes an unpowered descent onto the target.......

Two shooters were standing near a pond when some ducks flew in. One shooter yelled "Duck" and the other shooter said "where" then the duck hit his head. The asteroid is like the duck

Roger K say: Explosives of any type are useless in space. The reason they work on earth is due to the shock wave propagated by the atmosphere.

Since there is no atmosphere in space, all you get is a flash of light and shrapnel from the bomb casing.

In any event, as everyone ahs said, you want to deflect it slightly and not blow it up.

PhotonX say: The 'B' in ICBM stands for 'ballistic', which is another way of saying it's basically a rock--the rocket has just enough energy to hurl the warhead into sub-orbital space, at which time it makes an unpowered descent onto the target. It takes much more energy to even enter low Earth orbit than it does to launch a ballistic missile, and more still to depart Earth. So, no, there is no way existing nuclear missiles are anywhere near powerful enough to deliver a payload anywhere than to Earth.

And, as others point out, 'blowing up' an asteroid isn't the solution, Hollywood adventure movies notwithstanding. Diversion is the key--the slightest trajectory change is all that's needed to turn a hit into a miss, assuming we're alert enough to detect the asteroid well in advance, and wise enough to have the technology built and tested *before* it's needed. We have a pretty good handle on any asteroids that may pose a hazard to Earth, and within the next couple of decades can reasonably expect to have them all mapped. It's unpredictable comets that pose the greatest danger.

CarolOklaNola say: The key to getting large asteroids NOT to impact Earth is to CHANGE THE ORBIT of the asteroid enough so that it DOES NOT impact Earth. Blowing up massive asteroid is just going to create a whole bunch of less massive meteoroids and hunks of rock that impact over much wider area and cause MORE damage.. We have to FIND the asteroid FIRST and far enough BEFORE the impact.. BLOWING UP THE ASTEROID WILL NOT WORK.
