If a planet collided with Earth, what would be the effects and is there a chance for survival

Asteroids hit the earth all the time, deserts are littered with them, it only takes one big enough to avoid disintegration in the atmosphere and were all DOOMED!.........
We are living in a cosmic maelstrom, even an asteroid the size of a bus could hit a volatile volcano or fault line releasing enough dust and poisonous gas to kill everything on earth. What's more worrying is that when you look at asteroid activity, it is quite likely. Remember it was only a few years ago that the Schumacher Levy comets crashed into Jupiter.

....and where's Superman? Banging Lois Lane, that's where!

Hi. A head on collision would be disastrous. A glancing blow that only had the upper atmospheres involved would be less so. The rate of travel would determine your personal chance for survival. If the atmospheric collision was just over the horizon and the Earth was turning away from it you would probably survive.

There's an impact calculator here:
http://impact.ese.ic.ac.uk/ImpactEffects…

The diameter of the smallest solar system planet, Mercury, is about 2500 km, and densities for terrestrial planets range from about 4000 to 5500 kg per cubic metre. You could also consider bodies like the asteroids (much smaller), the Galilean moons (comparable in size to Mercury but less dense), or stuff like Pluto and Eris.

It's happened - early in our history... a Mars-sized object impacted the Earth, ejecting enough material to create the moon. Probably the entire crust of the Earth was turned to magma - no chance for any life to survive..,.

For you, the effect would be exactly the same as if a truck came through your window.

The only difference is that the truck is vastly more probable than a planet, even if you live on the tenth floor.

Cheers!

the whole earth would become a flaming ball of lava and it would take millions of years to cool, no chance for survival without spaceships or something

-
Only if humans had somewhere else too go (Such as other planet) if not no

-
How big of a planet? A Sun or a golf ball?

-
Only if you're Chuck Norris.
