Is it harmful to look at the solar eclipse bare eyed

Even worse, because its dark our irises open extra wide, allowing even more of the radiation inside. The reason why the radiation normally doesnt get into your eyes is the simple fact that the opening of our irises is so small, and radiation tends to travel in a straight line without bouncing like normal sunlight. So as long as you dont look at the sun,......
It's not, however - the sun is still radiating plenty of very real, very HARMFUL radiation that will get into your eyes and will damage them. Even worse, because it's 'dark' our irises open extra wide, allowing even more of the radiation inside.

I've damaged my eyes by accidentally catching a glance at a lit welding torch. I still have a spot in my eyes that I can see to this day because of it. Cooking the inside of your eyeballs is probably not a good idea.

Yes it is harmful and you will do irreparable damage to your eyes. Never look at the sun without protective equipment. EVEN with sunglasses on. Most sun glasses are weakly polarized and dont block out all of the harmful solar radiation.
Your teacher is misinformed.

The only time it is safe to look bare eyed at a solar eclipse is when the Sun is TOTALLY covered by the Moon, which is during totality. When observing annular and partial eclipse and total eclipse before or after totality DO NOT look at the Sun bare eyed.
-
Your teacher didn't say that.
You can watch an eclipse of the moon bare eyed.
You should not watch an eclipse of the sun that way.
Even during totality the parts of the corona, emitting harmful invisible UV might
be in 'line of sight' without you realizing it.
-
During a total eclipse you can look - but if you mistime it by a second you permanently damage your eyes.
-
Looking at a total solar eclipse with the naked eye is harmless, during the partial phases you can damage your eyes.
-
Yes. Use a screen like a piece of cardboard or cardstock and put a small hole in it to view. Also, wear sunglasses.
-
Yeah, it appears dark so you don't automatically turn away, but the radiation is still burning your eyes and killing cells.
-
It can be harmful. It's advised that you avoid doing it.
