Asteroids come from the inner solar system and they can be tracked and if there was one in a collision course with Earth they would find out about it years ahead of time and have plenty of time to deflect it. Its Comets you have to worry about. They can come hurling towards Earth from the outer solar system with maybe only a few months of warning and there wouldn’t be time to deflect it. Exploding it to bits would only make the situation worse and it would be like a shotgun blast instead of a rifle round. The chance of a comet in a collision course with Earth in the near future is low, but humans probably wouldn’t be able to do anything about it if it did happen.

No known asteroids even going to come close for several more years.
No known asteroids expected to hit.
We've made it through more than half the year.
If it hits you, you will never know it. It won't hurt, your sphincter will not tighten up, you will not even have time to be frightened.
So what are you really afraid of, living? Ask yourself that question.

I don't think something like that is going to happen but supposedly NASA has confirmed that on December 21 2012 the sun is going to give off huge solar flares that are going to hit the Earth and melt most of the ice caps and raise the Ocean levels dramatically...and when I say dramatically I mean like imagine most of the East and West coasts of U.S flooded. In fact Brad Meltzers Decoded show gives proof. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=257qyyK6K…

There was an asteroid scheduled to crash on August 8th, near Cleveland, Ohio.

The overall odds are less than being hit by lightning, but the chance it won't happen at any time is always greater than zero. Tiny asteroids (known as meteors) hit the Earth every day.

Can't say the chance of it happening is zero, but, I'm going to say the chance is very, very small.
