"BQ: what is the difference between an extra dimensional being and an extraterrestrial?"
First this question. An "extra-dimensional being" is a mythological construct. A unicorn, deity, angel, ghost, demon, etc. Something that is not of our known universe and does not follow the physical laws that we and an actual extra-terrestrial would be compelled to follow. In that sense an extra-terrestrial is more like us terrestrials than an extra-dimensional being.
As for your main question, check out your biology books. You might want to look into extremophiles that thrive in conditions that are deadly to most life forms. Just to expand your horizons and speculative imagination while still being "realistic".
You might want to read up on animal intelligence for a few species. Case in point: Octopi/squids. Very brainy, as intelligent as any mammal, with a complex "language" that is apparently based on visual cues and color/pattern changes.
Some have speculated there might be "floaters" that drift in the clouds of gaseous planets, aloft using bladders filled with a gas lighter than the surrounding atmosphere.
Just some examples for you.
