Just about to buy one so really need to know this. Does the TI 83 show "textbook display"?

No, it doesn't. In fact, the TI-83/84/Plus/SE calculators only output numeric answers, and doesn't calculate with symbols at all. So, for example, if you're expect the calculator to spit out the factored form of x²−4, or rearrange the equation x = 2y − 1 for y, then don't, because those calculator can't do it. That's the job for a TI-89 or TI-Nspire CAS.
The latest TI-84 Plus calculators (with TI-OS v2.53MP or higher), however, support what they call "MathPrint" (known as pretty print in computer science circuits), which provides basic "textbook display." See the links in my source for a picture. Still can't solve things algebraically, but looks a bit nicer when calculating stuff.
