I'm considering creating my own dubia roach colony and was wondering if I could use shredded paper in place of the tradition egg carton. I would only be using this for a month at max. I just wanted to be sure this is OK, also if that can be used could i rip up cardboard and put it in there.

Probably, just watch for moisture making a mash, or mold developing. The egg carton is just nice because it increases surface area for them to stand around. Try to give the cardboard some kind of structure so they can hide about.
