By not eating it.
Like millions of other people around the world.
These days there are so many substitutes for meat (unlike years ago).
There are loads of high protein and iron alternatives:
Tofu, quinoa (sp?), mushrooms, seaweed etc.
Google vegetarian options for protein and iron.
HOWEVER -
If like me - You LOVE the taste of meat, and cant bear the thought of not eating it...
Then make sure you do your research on sustainable foods, and humane animal keeping and slaughtering.
I only eat free range eggs AND free range chicken meat.
I do not eat veal, due to cruel conditions calves are often kept (and have not for 20 plus years even though it is my favourite form of beef).
I only eat bacon or pork, if it is free range.
This means often going without even though I LOVE pork/crackling, because it is so hard to get (I have to travel to get it). Everytime I am at the supermarket, I make a point of asking "Do you have free range pork/bacon", even when I know they dont (hoping nagging will make them get it in).
I only eat sustainable FARMED salmon and tuna, whenever possible.
(google companies - you will be shocked what you uncover).
I try to support local, as much as possible. Because it is easier to find out their laws and regulations. NOT imported companies - Especially from countries like China that have VERY slack laws regarding humane animal care etc. Or Japan as they STILL support whale hunting.
Choose wisely, eat meat less often, and when you do eat it ENJOY guilt free, knowing you do your best to support good animal care.
PS -
I love eating my friends calves each year...
Because I watch them grow up in huge paddocks, with good food and companions, enjoing the sun and play afforded them until they are 9-12 months old.
At which time they are loaded on a trailer, and slaughted quickly, only 15 mins up the road.
People always ask - How can you see them happy then eat them??
