The Mark 48, ADCAP, (ADvanced CAPability) torpedo uses a sonar array in the nose to track enemy ships or submarines by either listening to the sounds made by the ship(or submarine), or by pinging with a sonar pulse and listening for the echo. The sonar array is 16 inches (40 cm) in diameter (by my personal measurement). If the array must be 10 wavelengths in diameter to focus the sonar signal properly, WHAT IS THE FREQUENCY OF OPERATION OF THE TORPEDO SONAR? The speed of sound in sea water is 1530 m/s.

A. 10,000 Hz B. 20,000 Hz C. 30,000 Hz D. 40,000 Hz E. 50,000 Hz

Anything would help! Thank you :)

λ = 40/10 = 4 cm = 0.04m

f = V/λ = 1530/.04 = 38250 Hz
