What kind of plants, flowers are most popular to plant during the summer time

I am getting interested in a new hobby which is gardening. And wondering what plants, flowers during the summer time are most popular.

What type of care do these plants, flowers need and so forth.

Marigolds bloom ALL summer, and are green all the time. They are very easy to grow...and look very pretty in boxes or gardens. Tall or short ones. Zinnias are easy, as are Petunias and Geraniums.
