The bear and the floe recoil at 1 m/s. How fast was the bear running? How much energy was consumed by making huge claw marks, noise etc. when the bear landed?Thanks!......
A 200 kg bear jumps onto a stationary ice floe,800 kg. The bear and the floe recoil at 1 m/s. How fast was the bear running? How much energy was consumed by making huge claw marks, noise etc. when the bear landed?

Thanks!

Momentum before = Momentum after
mv = mv

200kg(v) = (200kg+800kg)(1m/s)
v = 5m/s

Energy before = Energy After
1/2mv^2 = 1/2mv^2 + energy consumed
1/2(200)(5^2) = (1/2)(1000)(1^2) + energy consumed
2500J = 500J + energy consumed

Energy consumed = 2000J
