What was the difference between Davisson and Germer's experiment with nickel crystals and Thomson's experiment

but i dont know what it means by that...Any replies are much appreciated, thank you-First, note there are 2 Thomsons: Joseph John (JJ) Thomson discovered the electron.......
The experiments that were conducted in 1927 to verify de Broglie's idea....

Both used beams of electrons fired into a crystal to find a diffraction pattern. My book emphasizes that Thomson's passed electrons 'THROUGH' a tiny crystal, but i don't know what it means by that...

Any replies are much appreciated, thank you

First, note there are 2 Thomsons: Joseph John ('JJ') Thomson discovered the electron. But the question is about his son, George Paget Thomson.

The link briefly describes both experiments.

Davisson and Germer relied on interference patterns arising from the reflection of the waves (comparable to the way Bragg diffraction of X-rays occurs, or the operation of a reflection diffraction grating).

But Thomson used interference patterns produced when electrons passed through thin gold foil; the interference pattern is produced from the electrons that have passed through the foil (comparable to the way a transmission diffraction grating works).
