d/2 = 8.5 / 2 = 4.the time taken for each locomotive to travel 4.time = distance / speed = 4.25 km / 75 km/h = 0.057h = 3.......
Two locomotives approach each other on the same track. Each has a speed of v = 75 km/h with respect to the ground. If they are initially d = 8.5 km apart, how long will it be before they crash?

-
Since both the locomotives are travelling at the same constant speed, they will crash at distance d/2; hence:

d/2 = 8.5 / 2 = 4.25 km

the time taken for each locomotive to travel 4.25km to the collision point is:

time = distance / speed = 4.25 km / 75 km/h = 0.057h = 3.4 minutes = 3min 24 sec

The two locomotives will crash in 3 minutes and 24 seconds.

-
Each locomotive will travel 4.25 km before crashing.

Time = distance/speed = 4.25 / 75 hours
= 60x4.25 / 75 minutes = 3.4 minutes = 3 min 24 seconds
