I want to know how to work this problem. Can you please show me the steps you used?
Two hot rods start from rest at a distance of 500m apart. Both cars hit the gas at the same tim and drive towards each other with car #1 and car #2 having accelerations of 5.4m/s2 and 4.6m/s2, respectively. Relative to the starting point of car #1, at what point do the cars pass each other?

-
Distance = 500m.
Closing rate of acceleration = (5.4 + 4.6) = 10m/sec^2.
Time until they pass = sqrt. (2d/a), = sqrt. (1000/10), = 10 secs.
In 10 secs., car 1 will have travelled 1/2 (t^2 x a) = 1/2 (10^2 x 5.4), = 270 metres.
That checks out.
