A bicycle pedal is pushed straight downwards by a foot with a 39 Newton force. The shaft of the pedal is 20 cm long. If the shaft is π/3 radians past horizontal, what is the magnitude of the torque about the point where the shaft is attached to the bicycle? Nm

Angle of pedal = 1/3 rad = 360/6, = 60 degrees past horizontal.
Effective effort arm = (cos 60) x 0.2m. = 0.1m.
Torque applied = (39 x .1) 3.9N/m.
