I would like to observe a major surgical procedure in an Operating Room. Is this possible? If so, how do I go about making this happen?

It is possible. I have done it. It is a sterile environment, so you'll have to wear the proper gear. You'll also have to stand more to the corner or where the anesthesiologist is because the air pressure is such that it keeps your germs from blowing into the patient.
If you know any surgeons, anesthesiologists or physicians, just ask them if it would be cool if you shadowed them because you are interested in the field; 99% of the time they will let you watch. If you shadow your family doctor, you could ask him if he could suggest a surgeon so you could get more exposure to the medical field.
Some people who don't know anyone, just call random surgeons from the phone book. Many times they are willing to help you out.

Random people are not allowed into the operating room. It needs to remain sterile and with extra people it gets crowded and becomes a dangerous environment.
There are videos online of surgical procedures.
If you are a student in a medical or nursing field then you will have the chance to see procedures in the OR.

become a medical student, or a student nurse of some kind. Part of your education will be observing and reporting on Operating Room observations.
Oh god it's boring....1hour of prep , 20 minutes of snipping around, another hour of counting sponges, wheel the guy out, wheel the next one in...

Or become a patient that needs a major surgery, and ask them to keep you awake.
