im thinking of becoming an orthopedist but i dont want to be a surgeon, is that possible?

Orthopedics is a surgical specialty. Orthopedic residency will include surgical training and being involved in many surgical procedures.
Once you are finished with training you can choose not to operate however that will reduce your patient volume and your salary.

No you do not have to be. but if it were me i would be both so my patient would be more at ease knowing i would be doing the surgery and not someone who doesn't know me or my case. but this is just my opimion

You can be an Orthopedist without doing surgeries.
Just complete your surgical residency as required, then go get a PhD or two and then go into Orthopedic research. .
