I'm writing a fanfiction story where the main character is shot in the back with an exit wound near the navel. They end being hit in the spine and having permanent below-the-waist paralysis and a blood vessel is also hit (causing enough blood loss for everyone to be really worried for a while). How long would surgery take in that case?
Thanks!
Thanks!

The paraplegia indicates spinal cord damage, and you say it's permanent so the cord is cut in two. The length of the surgery would require a neurosurgeon to trim up the cord and approximate the ends and then address the damage to the involved vertebrae. To cause that much blood loss you would have nicked the abdominal aorta after the bullet ricochets off the spine, and you will need a vascular surgeon to fix that. Total time in O.R. 5-7 hours (I want an autographed copy of the book)..

Death would likely be instant.
