I know that a Doctorate Nurse Practitioner and a Medical Doctor are not equivalent, I already know this. But I am considering go into one of these fields and I want to know which one is best for me.

I already have a Bachelour's in Biology and a Bachelour's in Nursing, I got them as part of a dual degree programme. I like nursing, but I feel sometimes like I would be better suited in medicine.

My eventual goal is to work with children. I either want to be a Paediatric Doctorate Nurse Pracitioner or a Paediatrician. But I don't know how these two differ in terms of their job duties.

Could anyone politely explain, without bashing MDs or DNPs, the differences between the two?

PS. I live in the USA and I live in a state/region where DNPs have the right to open an independent practice. This makes a difference as in some states DNPs can not open an independent practice.

It really depends on how you want to practice. Medical doctors have a much more thorough understanding of everything that goes into medical practice - from anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, pathology and pharmacology to the clinical aspects of medical practice. DNP's are nurses. They do not have the educational foundation that doctors do. They do not even have enough basic science education to apply to medical school (unless you completed the medical school prerequisites as part of your Biology degree - most nurses have only the BSN and the watered down sciences that are a part of that.)

Physicians tend to utilize critical thinking skills more than nurses do. It's a part of our education in medical school. If you want to practice "cookbook medicine", than continue in the nursing line. With the way health care in this country is going, you'll have no problem finding a job. (I do not see midlevel practitioners personally, but most of the country is ignorant and will see anyone, and by ignorant, I mean just that. They truly do not know if they are seeing a nurse or doctor, and are frequently misled by midlevels who do not correct patients who call them "doctor". I know PA's that do that.)
