What does x equal (adding stuff to make it 20 characters long, who made that rule...)

What does x equal?

2(x+5)^2/ 12 = 2.166

2(x+5)^2/ 12 = 20.166
(x+5)^2 = 120.996
x+5 = ±11
x = 6 or -16

[2(x+5)^2]/12 = 2.166

basically you want to distribute your x terms as much as possible, group every value on one side and then factor the find your x-values (or quadratic formula if it doesn't factor easily)

So distribute x terms
[2(x+5)^2]/12 - I also simplify the 2/12 part
(x^2+10x+25)/6 = 2.166
x^2 + 10x + 25 = 13

Now group everything on one side
x^2 + 10x + 12

and factor
x^2 + 10x +12
(x + )(x + )

This doens't factor easily... quadratic formula!
A = 1
B = 10
C = 12

x = -1.394, -8.606

So x equals -1.394 or -8.606

Multiply both sides by 12. (I assume that 20.166 is really 20 & 2/3)

2(x + 5)^2 = 248

(x + 5)^2 = 124

(x + 5) = sqrt(4) * sqrt(31)

(x + 5) = +/-2sqrt(31)

x = -5 +/- 2sqrt(31)

The answer is roughly 11.

x = -8.605

x = -1.395
