equation i am given is x^2 - 2x + y^2 + 8y = 1

scientists use eccentricity
e=a/c to determine how rounded the curve is
e=0 circle
0 e=1 parabola
e>1 hyperbola

so to find e, you have to determine a and c
put your equation into vertex form, use a and b to calculate c
then u r done.
