The three conductors from the street are the service-drop conductors for overhead service or the service-lateral conductors for underground service. There are two hot conductors and a neutral conductor with 120 volts from each hot to neutral and 240 volts between the two hot conductors.

For overhead services, the service-drop conductors are spliced at the service head to three conductors that go down the service mast conduit to the meter socket enclosure or another enclosure.

Below the meter, there is usually a copper rod driven into the ground to serve as a grounding electrode. A grounding electrode conductor connects the neutral to the grounding electrode at the bottom of the meter or at some other point between the load end of the service drop and the service disconnecting means.

Three conductors called the service entrance conductors go from the meter to the service disconnecting means which is often the main circuit breaker at the top of the distribution panel. Buss bars in the distribution panel connect single-pole circuit breakers to one of the hot conductors for 120 volts and two-pole circuit breakers to the two hot conductors for 240 volts.

The conductors from the circuit breakers to the receptacles are called branch circuit feeders. For 120 volts, there is one hot conductor, one neutral conductor and an equipment grounding conductor. For 240 volts, there are two hot conductors, a neutral and a ground. The equipment grounding conductors are connected to the grounding electrode conductor or to the grounding electrode conductor and the neutral in the distribution panel.
