Why can't doctors/scientists focus on cures rather than treatments

[From: ] [author: ] [Date: 12-05-23] [Hit: ]
HIV, AIDS, genetic diseases...etc?......
I am from the United States and it seems that pharmacies run this country.

It puzzles me that we have the best universities in the world but we still don't
have the answers to many diseases that exist today.

We have a billion dollar pharmaceutical industry but no answers to cure diseases
only the temporary treatments for them.

Why is that? You would think by now one of the major universities would have
the cures to cancer, HIV, AIDS, genetic diseases...etc?

This is a repost of the question I asked a few days ago. It seemed to attract
a lot of reposes from people. So, I wanted to see what others had to say?

There are a lot of strong opinionated people responding to this question. The
more responses, the better. It would be more interesting to get some responses
from actually doctors/scientists but I don't know if these people use Yahoo answers.
Regardless, your responses are equally important.

You're a little simplistic in saying "the pharmacies run this country." It's not just them--it's also the banks, the insurance companies, their lobbyists, their lawyers, and their lap dogs in the legislature....but I digress...

Yes we have the best universities, and a lot has been accomplished, but research is very hard (if we knew what we were doing, we wouldn't need to do research), and is one of those things where you definitely get what you pay for. Research is expensive. University research departments are struggling just to keep heads above water. The golden days of respect and unwavering support for science and science education in this country in the early 1960s is long gone, and will probably never come back. The general trend for Federal and State support for universities has been steadily decreasing ever since the Vietnam War and recession it produced, and if the Tea Party idealogues obtain real power in this country, then basic research and higher education can be expected to go completely down the toilet. There are a lot of outstanding scientists out here, but we don't have enough money to fund them all (only 10-15% of submitted NIH research grant applications get funded). AS rich as they are, even pharmaceutical companies are cutting back on their own basic research divisions--far more profitable to focus on their established money making drugs.
