12x-3x-8x=3-12
x=-9

Every negative signal, before parenthesis, inverts the signal of the elements inside them. Thus, we get -(3x) -(-12), which is equal to -3x + 12

Now, 12x - 3x + 12 = 3 + 8x
Add 3x to both sides and we'll have:

12x - 3x + 3x + 12 = 3 + 8x + 3x
12x + 12 = 3 + 11x

Now, subtract 11x from both sides

12x - 11x + 12 = 3 + 11x - 11x
1x + 12 = 3
Now, decrease 12 from both sides

1x + 12 - 12 = 3 - 12
1x + 0 = -9
x = -9

-
Simplify each side first, which means we have to distribute the "minus" sign on the left to give us 12x - 3x + 12 = 3 + 8x. Now we can simplify to get 9x + 12 = 3 + 8x. Subtracting 8x from both sides, and then 12 as well gives x = -9.

To help reinforce your understanding of these concepts, I've searched and found a video tutorial and a worksheet of extra problems with solutions that address problems similar to this one, and I thought they might be helpful to you. I've listed them below.

-
12x - (3x - 12) = 3 + 8x

First expand it out the -negative

12x - 3x + 12 = 3 + 8x

Combine like terms on both sides

12 - 3x + 12 = 3 + 8x
9x + 12 = 3 + 8x

Subtract 8x from both sides

x + 12 = 3

Subtract 12 from both sides

x = -9
