i have no idea what the method is to solve an algebraic division question i have notes in my book but make no sense to me.

could you show working and explain the method to each step thanks

Divide:

a) x³ - 4x² + x + 5 by x + 4
b) x³ - 4x² + 4x by x - 5

Step 1: What times (x + 4) gives you approximately x^3? Answer: x^2
