1. Simplify the algebraic expression by combining similar terms. (Objective 3)
5(x − 1.2) − 4(x − 2.1) − 3(x + 1.9)

2. Answer the question with an algebraic expression.
The width of a rectangle is w feet, and its length is 3 feet more than four times its width. What is the perimeter of the rectangle in feet?

For #1, all you have to do is distribute the 5, the -4, and the -3:

5x - 6 - 4x + 8.4 - 3x -5.7

Then, collect like terms to get:

-2x - 3.3

For #2, it might help if you draw a picture of the rectangle.

So the width of the rectangle is w. The length is 4w + 3.

Since perimeter simply means the sum of the sides, you'd get:

w + w + (4w + 3) + (4w + 3)

Then, you can distribute the + signs to get:

w + w + 4w + 3 + 4w + 3

Collect like terms to get:

10 w + 6

I'm only answering because people get hung up on word problems. I can sympathize with that. So I'm only doing number two. To walk the perimeter of a rectangle, you need to walk the length twice and the width twice. The width is w, so that's 2w to do it twice. The length is four times its width (4w) plus three feet, making it 4w+3. You need two lengths, 2(4w+3)=8w+6. Add your two widths to the two lengths, (8w+6)+2w=10w+6.

5x•6-4x•-8.4-3x•5.7 distributive property
12x+3.3 all like terms
12x=-3.3 subtraction
x=-.275 division, answer

i dont even want to do the second one

1.(5x-6)-(4x-8.4)-(3x+5.7)
5x-6-4x+8.4-3x-5.7
-2x-3.5
2. 2w+2(3+4w)=P

-
1.12x -5.2
