Math 152! :( homework question.

I don't get these two problems... cant anybody help me?

1. Two eggs and three cups of ice cream contain 701 milligrams of cholesterol. One egg and one cup of ice cream contain 325 milligrams of cholesterol. What is cholesterol content in each item?

2. The distance between LA and Chicago is 935 miles. On a map the distance is represented by 26 inches, on the same map, the cities of New York and San Diego are 48 inches apart. To the nearest while number, what is the actual distance between New York and San Diego?

1. 2E+3C=701
2E+2C = 650
C = 51 mg
E = 274 mg

2. 48*935/26 = 1,726 miles

1. Let x represent the amount of cholesterol, in milligrams, in 1 egg.
Let y represent the amount of cholesterol, in milligrams, in 1 cup of ice cream.
Then, 2x+3y=701 & x+y=325.
Call 2x+3y=701 equation 1 & x+y=325 equation 2.

If we move x to the other side in equation 2, we get:
y=325-x.

Since x and y are the same in both equations, we can substitute y=325-x into equation 1.
Then, we have:
2x+3(325-x)=701

If we use the distributive property:
2x+3(325)-3(x)=701

Simplify:
2x+975-3x=701

If we move 701 to the left side, and 2x-3x to the right side:
975-701=3x-2x

Simplify:
274=x

If we substitute 274=x into equation 2:
y=325-274
y=51


Therefore, 1 egg has 274 milligrams of cholesterol, and 1 cup of ice cream has 51 milligrams of cholesterol.




2. Let z represent the actual distance between New York and San Diego. We can set up a ratio, with map length (in inches) on top, and actual distance (in miles) on the bottom. Then we have:
26/935=48/z

If we cross-multiply, we get:
26z=48(935)

Simplify:
26z=44880

Divide both sides by 26:
z=1726.153846...

Round to the nearest whole number:
z=1726


Therefore, the actual distance between New York and San Diego is 1726 miles.
