Math 152! :( homework question.

1. Lets assume that x=the number of milligrams of cholesterol in one egg and y=the number of milligrams of cholesterol in one cup of ice cream

You can then write the the equations 2x+3y=701 and x+y=325. Then all you have to do is solve the system of equations. There are many ways to do this but personally I choose to put one equation in terms of x or y. So I would rewrite x+y=325 as x=325-y then you can plug in to the equation 2x+3y=701. so 2(325-y)+3y=701 therefore y=51. You can then plug this y value into either equation and you will find that x=274 Ans. 274mg cholesterol in one egg and 51mg of cholesterol in one scoup of ice cream

2.Okay so you know that there are 26 inches for every 935 miles. NY and San Diego are 48 inches apart so you can multiple 48 inches by the ratio 935mi/26 inches. Inches cancel out and you are left with an answer of approximately 1726 miles

2E + 3C = 701
1E + 1C = 325

MULTIPLY EQUATION 2 BY 2

2E + 2C = 650

SUBTRACT THIS EQUATION FROM EQUATION 1

C = 51
E = 274

ANSWER EGG = 274 MG OF CHOLESTROL
ICE CREAM = 51 MG OF CHOLESTROL

2) 48 /26 x 935 = 1726 MILES ANSWER
