outcome O 2 has frequency 5/a, and outcome O 3 has frequency 3/a. There are only 3 outcomes. I tried to substitute a variable and got 5 but that was wrong. I am really unsure of how to get the right answer here, any tips to get me in the right direction?......
Rework problem 17 from section 2.1 of your text, involving the outcomes of
an experiment. For this problem, assume that outcome O 1 has frequency 12/a, outcome O 2 has frequency 5/a, and outcome O 3 has frequency 3/a. There are only 3 outcomes. I tried to substitute a variable and got 5 but that was wrong. I am really unsure of how to get the right answer here, any tips to get me in the right direction?

can be solved only if the outcomes are mutually exclusive (non- overlapping) & exhaustive (probabilities adding up to 1)
12/a + 5/a + 3/a = 1 , 20/a = 1,
a = 20
