to begin with, substitute x^2=t

6t^2+4t-2
2(3t^2+2t-1)
2(3t^2+3t-t-1)
2(3t(t+1)-1(t+1))
2(3t-1)(t+1)

reverse substitute t=x^2

2(3x^2-1)(x^2+1)
2((sqrt3)x-1)((sqrt3)x+1)(x^2+1)

-
2(3x^4+2x^2-1)
2(x^2+1)(3x^2-1)
