it's a number, you can only divide by 1 or the number itself

for example 7
you can divide 7 by 1 or 7, all other divisions will have a not-natural-number as result

A prime number is a number that is divisible only itself and 1. According to that logic you would think 1 is a prime number, but by definition its not. Here are some prime numbers:
2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29....
You'll notice that you can't divide these numbers with any other number except 1 and itself without a remainder.

For example 13. The it's only factors are 1 and 13, so it is a prime number.

12, however, is a composite number because it more than two factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12.

1 is only the only number that's neither prime nor composite because it has only one factor - itself.
