John P say: "The Americas" are generally thought of as two continents. North America consists principally of Canada and the USA - but you probably think of the USA as "America".
South America consists of many countries, including Brazil, Argentina, and Columbia. Mexico etc down to Panama is often referred to as Central America.
Now promise me that you will look at a map of the Americas and see where the USA lies in relation to all those other 30 or more countries in "The Americas" (which includes the Caribbean).

You really got to look at an atlas that shows the world, not just the U.S.
