I can't seem to enjoy even 20 minutes of decent internet surfing/gaming because I have to deal with these ridiculous power cuts that are come and go. It just happens at any bloody time which can last between 5 minutes to 2 hours. Is it just in India or is this sort of thing common in other places as well?

I am proud Indian too.
Power cuts is now highest in India. This is due to following reasons:
1. Over population -> over demand but less production.
2. Less production because :
i) Fuel for nuclear and atomic reactors are costly. We do not have these fuels even in appreciable amount naturally.
ii) Improper maintenance of power stations, Transformers, and transmission lines.
iii) Lack of proper technological implements
AND ABOVE ALL:
A CORRUPT GOVERNMENT
