mike1942-f say: While MEs work in many different fields or concentrations, their primary training is to look at materials and designs and make sure they work together. Is the material someone has selected strong enough to withstand the forces that someone else has designed in. Or if the ME is doing much of the work, then she/he has to select the material and adjust the thickness and treatments so the artistic design can be made to work.

Edith say: He becomes an expert on some sort of equipment, generally some big chunk of complicated iron that does something. Somebody wants to buy one of them and it is his job to see that it gets built and does what the buyer wants it to do. That could involve having thousands of smaller parts ordered and built, making parts, having things go wrong, having the big thing assembled, testing the thing and delivering the thing. And most importantly, being able to figure out why the thing doesn't work like it is supposed to.
