And since we have yet to find any any space faring life, it's a bit of a hubris to consider iot "best in the universe".

All you can say about it is that as far as Earth is concerned, it's been around for 50 years so it's not the latest model of car, but it WORKS. Just about anything that could go wrong with it already has gone wrong, and the problems have been ironed out. It's the old banger of the space world but it reliably does what it's built for.
(A lot did go wrong in the early days - the first one actually launched with an astronaut in it killed the astronaut through slamming into the ground at several hundred mph because the parachutes failed. The scientists TOLD the Soviet President that the thing wasn't ready because of parachute problems, but the President told them to launch anyway to show off the latest bit of Soviet space kit. All very well making Vladimir Komarov a Hero of the Soviet Union afterwards - that's small apology for killing him.)
Best for what? How do you define best?
Incidentally, the rocket used to launch it is even older. It's just the latest version of the R7 that launched Sputnik 1 60 years ago.

As for "best", you have to specify "best for what".

quantumclaustrophobe say: Well, it certainly has a great track record... As for the 'best' - I think you'll need to define which category that would be. As for 'roominess' inside - that's a no... The Apollo capsules were bigger, and the shuttle had 3 decks, with a lot more room.
