. would the normal force vector be smaller than the force exerted on the book by the string?? please help.........
a book is on a table and a string is attached to it and lightly pulled. The book remains in contact with the table and does not move.

i'm trying to draw a fbd but stuck... would the normal force vector be smaller than the force exerted on the book by the string?? please help...

If the book is not moving all the forces must sum to zero. I hope this helps.

It appears that you have two vertical forces -- the reaction force of the from the table against the book in the positive y-direction (y-axis aligned along the gravity vector) and the resultant of the weight of the book in the negative y-direction and the force applied to the top of the book in the positive y-direction. The reaction load from the table will balance the resultant (weight - force) vector until the the reaction load results in a negative value which will mean the force applied is large enough to overcome the book weight.
