A speedy tortoise can run with a speed of 10 cm/s and a hare can run 20 times as fast. If they both start at
the same time but the hare stops to rest for 2 minutes. The tortoise wins by a shell (20 cm).
a. How long does the race take?
b. What is the length of the race?
thank you

Simultaneous equations.. Speed of tortoise = 10 cm/s Speed of hare = 200 cm/s
Let time of race = t
Let length of race = l
Using the equation Distance= speed*time
eqn1 : 10t = l
eqn2 : t = l/200 + 120 for the hare, time will equal (distance/speed) PLUS 120 seconds of rest
t = l/200 +120 plug into l in to eqn1 in place of t
10*(l/200 + 120) = l
l/20 + 1200 = l
(19/20)*l = 1200
l = 1200 / (19/20)
l = 1263.157895 m
t = 126.3156895 s
