Why are my earthworms gone without a trace

I bought some night crawlers from a bait shop in order to put them in my garden at work. When I got home, I put the worms in a hermit crab container (no crabs were in there) with some more potting soil, wet it a little bit and left it for the weekend. I checked on them on Saturday and they were still alive and kickin' doing their earthworm thing.

When Tuesday rolled around and I checked on them again, they were gone! I dug through the container and didn't find any trace of them. I even removed the soiled with my hands and made sure there weren't in there, there were no remains, no earthworm corpses, nothing at all. What could have happened to them? If they die can they decompose that quickly?

A few choices:

1. A predator (cat, bird, nearby animal, human) took it.

2. They crawled out cause they were bored there (unlikely, but happens)

Was the top closed?

I did'nt quit understand your explanation of exactly where these worms were, but I know that they will crawl out of a small container looking for greener pastures, and that if they get stranded, they will die and dry out fast, a dried earthworm corpse is hard to spot. A 3 inch worm once dried out is so amall you'd have a hard time spotting it on the floor.

My hypothesis is that while you were gone an owl came to deliver your letter informing you of your acceptance to Hogwarts. But, the owl saw the worms, made a tasty meal out of them, and was so distracted by their yummyness that it flew off in search of more, forgetting to deliver the letter of a lifetime. Sad, I know. ):
