Please help I cant figure this out and it is not in my book. Also I am homeschooled so dont post a answer saying I should have paid attention in class.

Material(magma) from the mantle bubbles up along the mid-ocean ridge(MOR) causing the sea bed to spread. At continental edges the sea bedrock slips under the continental rock(subduction). The rock of the continents more or less floats on top of the mantle and is more or less free to move around where ever the forces causing magma the rise push them.

think of the crust of the earth riding on a conveyor belt. the mantle consists of two parts:
1- lithosphere.. the lithosphere is rather plastic and is on top. Here the continental crust above rides along the lithosphere (very slowly of course)
2- asthenosphere.. pressure and temperature is increased at this level and rocks and minerals are heated to liquids (magma).
that is a basic answer leaving out subduction and moho etc.
hope this helped
