What makes diamond so hard and so fragile at the same time?
Hardest mineral around, but it will break to pieces, if you drop it down.

...but they aren't fragile. If your supposed diamond breaks into pieces, I can assure you that it is NOT a diamond.
As for the structure of a diamond, a diamond in whatever form you find it is one big carbon molecule.
